Technology for the green & blue economy
Westland is an IT consultancy and software studio for organisations working in climate, conservation, nature and the ocean. We build the systems, data platforms and AI tools that help you prove your impact, scale with confidence, and spend more of your time on the mission.
The challenge
The green and blue economy is growing fast. The technology underneath it often isn't keeping up.
Field surveys, sensors, satellite feeds, lab results and spreadsheets all live in different places, in different formats. Answering a simple question takes days.
Funders, investors, regulators and credit buyers want impact claims they can verify, whether that's carbon, biodiversity net gain, CSRD, TNFD or anti-greenwashing rules. Rough numbers aren't enough any more.
Small, expert teams end up relying on volunteers, off-the-shelf tools that don't quite fit, or agencies that don't understand the sector.
Everyone is talking about AI. Few organisations know where it will actually save time or money, or how to use it responsibly.
What we do
Senior advice when you need direction. A full delivery team when you need it built.
Clear, independent advice on what to build, buy or leave alone.
Web platforms and mobile apps built around how your team really works.
One trusted source of truth, instead of twenty spreadsheets.
Measurement, reporting and verification you can stand behind.
Practical AI that saves real hours, used responsibly.
Turning places and sensors into decisions.
Who we work with
Start-ups, scale-ups, NGOs, trusts, landowners, public bodies and the corporates working alongside them.
Our experience
Westland is new. The experience behind it isn't. We've spent decades building data platforms and data products that have to be accurate, run around the clock, and last for years.
The green and blue economy needs exactly that: data people can trust, and robust systems built to last. Westland brings that experience to the organisations working for the planet.
“Making messy data trustworthy is what we've always done. Now we're doing it for the planet.”
About
Westland is led by James Heaney.
For nearly thirty years I've run a data business that takes messy, inconsistent technical information and turns it into data that people across an industry rely on, and pay for.
Away from work, I'm a wildlife and landscape photographer, and I've spent a lot of time in the places this sector exists to protect. Westland brings those two halves together: the discipline of building trusted data, applied to the people restoring land and sea.
Projects are delivered by our team of experienced engineers and data specialists.
How we work
No black boxes and no lock-in. You see working software early, and you own what we build.
A free conversation to understand your mission, your data and where technology is holding you back.
A short, fixed-price discovery that gives you a clear plan, real costs and an honest view of what's worth building.
We deliver in short cycles, showing you working software every couple of weeks rather than at the end.
We hand over code, data and documentation you own, train your team, and stay on to support and extend it if you want us to.
We focus only on the green and blue economy. We learn your science, your standards and your stakeholders.
Efficient code, right-sized infrastructure and low-carbon hosting by default. No needless compute.
Honest advice, including when the right answer is a spreadsheet, an existing tool, or not building anything at all.
Questions
Westland is an IT consultancy and software studio for the green and blue economy. We help climate, nature, conservation and ocean organisations with technology strategy, custom software, data platforms, MRV and impact reporting, applied AI, and geospatial and IoT systems.
Start-ups, scale-ups, NGOs, charities, trusts, landowners, public bodies and corporate sustainability teams, in areas such as ocean and coastal conservation, nature recovery, biodiversity net gain, forestry, regenerative agriculture, clean energy, the circular economy, and carbon and nature markets.
MRV stands for measurement, reporting and verification: the evidence behind claims about carbon, biodiversity or other impact. We build the data systems that make MRV work, from collecting field, sensor and satellite data to keeping an audit trail and producing reports for carbon, biodiversity and ocean projects, and for frameworks such as CSRD and TNFD.
Yes. We offer fractional CTO support: senior technology leadership for a few days a month. We can review what you have, set a roadmap, choose platforms and vendors, and write the technology sections of grant and investment bids.
You do. We hand over the code, data and documentation, train your team, and avoid lock-in. If you want us to, we stay on to support and extend the system.
Fill in the contact form or email hello@westlandsystems.com to request a free 30-minute call. If there's a good fit, we propose a short, fixed-price discovery that gives you a clear plan and real costs before you commit to anything bigger.
Westland is a UK company, registered in England and Wales. We work with organisations remotely, so location is rarely a barrier.
